Medical Societies Select The Markens Group for Management

Aug 21, 2018

Marc Lederman, Executive Director of CPMA, and Tessa O’Sullivan, Senior Account Manager at The Markens Group, pose at our headquarters.

Three New England-based medical societies have selected The Markens Group as their full-service management firm: the Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association, Hartford Medical Society, and the New England Association of Neonatal Nurses. We hope to help these groups advance wellness throughout the region!

Medical societies comprise a large portion of the professional groups throughout the New England and the United States—and for good reason. These associations empower medical professionals to connect with one another, advance their various specialties, and, ultimately, provide better care to patients. Because these healthcare professionals are so focused on their patients, many medical associations look to management companies like The Markens Group to make sure their organizations operate efficiently.

One such association is the Hartford Medical Society (HMS). Founded in 1846, HMS provides retired and practicing physicians, as well as others interested in medicine and medical history, with opportunities for learning, camaraderie, and community service. The society hosts lectures, social activities, and scholarship programs. They also maintain a historical library, with volumes dating to the early 1500s, that is housed at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

A more specialized group, the Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association (CPMA) serves Connecticut’s podiatrists—those medical professionals who treat feet and ankle disorders. Established in 1910, CPMA holds an annual symposium in Hartford as well as several educational and certification courses throughout the year. It is a chapter of the American Podiatric Medical Association along with 52 other societies in states and other jurisdictions across the United States.

“I’m excited to have The Markens Group on board,” says Marc Lederman, Executive Director of CPMA. “The firm brings a wide range of professional skills to the table, and those skills should help CPMA to grow and succeed.”

The New England Association of Neonatal Nurses (NEANN) promotes learning and high standards in the practice of neonatal healthcare, or the care of newborns, especially those that are premature or ill. NEANN was originally founded in 1978 as the Connecticut Association of Neonatal Nurses. As part of a strategic evaluation in 2014, the group decided to widen its scope to all of New England. Today it has member nurses from seven different states. The group offers several meetings, educational events, and networking opportunities throughout New England.

To service the new client accounts and round out its team of association management professionals, The Markens Group has hired Tessa O’Sullivan as a Senior Account Manager. O’Sullivan has worked with professional societies and trade associations for nearly 30 years. Prior to joining the Markens team, she served various roles at another association management firm, including Account Director, Managing Editor, and Project Manager. She holds an MPA from the University of Hartford and a BA in Political Science from Marist College.

Tessa loves the variety that comes with managing societies and associations: “We’re planning a luncheon for neonatal nurses in a few weeks, a two day symposium for podiatrists in February, and we’re also helping the podiatrists to grow a new foundation that will support charitable organizations like Footwear with Care. The associations need strategic and technical support to do all that, and that’s where the Markens Group can help.”

In addition to event planning and foundation work, The Markens Group specializes in all of the competencies and knowledge areas required to manage an association. Some of these include marketing, financial management, strategic planning, and administrative services. (See our services page to get a better understanding of what we do.) The Markens Group is the only association management company in Western Massachusetts and one of only about 80 companies worldwide to be accredited under the Association Management Company Institute’s standard for management best practices.

“While most of our association clients are national in scope, our newest groups offer us an opportunity to work closer to home,” say Ben Markens, president and founder of The Markens Group. “Not only do I look forward to seeing each of them grow and prosper, I’d like to explore ways we can help connect the various medical groups in the area in order to promote a healthier, happier Pioneer Valley and New England.”

We’re so excited to welcome our new clients aboard, and we can’t wait to help them grow.
